Guidebook Okehampton Castle

Close to the northern edge of Dartmoor, in the secluded valley of the Okement river, stands Okehampton Castle, one of the most picturesque sites in the South West. This new Red Guide combines specially commissioned reconstruction drawings, atmospheric new site photography and an engaging and comprehensive text by Dr Nick Holder to tell the story of the castle.

In the 1070s or 1080s Baldwin of Meulles, a knight of William the Conqueror, built the first castle here – a motte and bailey with a strong stone keep. The castle passed into the ownership of another Norman family – the Courtenays – and in the early 14^th century Hugh Courtenay II carried out extensive building works, constructing a hall, chapel and luxurious apartments, the remains of which can be seen today. The medieval castle functioned largely as a retreat for hunting in the extensive surrounding parkland.

The castle was held by the Courtenay family until the 16^th century, but was confiscated after one of Hugh’s descendants, Henry, 10^th Earl of Devon, was executed for plotting against Henry VIII.

The castle was abandoned and fell into ruin, but its colourful history, peaceful location and attractive setting have ensured its enduring appeal to antiquarians, artists and visitors throughout subsequent centuries.
